Wheat Prices Surge Amid Geopolitical Tensions and Weather Concerns
The global wheat market has resumed its rally after a brief profit-taking session as escalating geopolitical tensions and worsening weather conditions in major producing regions continue to fuel supply concerns.
The European Union's grain output is projected to fall by more than 9% this year, the steepest annual drop in over two decades. This situation raises the prospect of higher costs for various food staples.
Scorching temperatures have dented production prospects in France and Germany, while Russian shipping restrictions, continued attacks on port infrastructure, and efforts to reroute grain exports have reinforced uncertainty surrounding near-term export availability.
The price of wheat futures in Chicago has climbed as much as 0.8% after a 4.1% surge on Wednesday to near a three-year high. Prices are up 19% this month, buoyed by the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
