Wind Revolutionizes Small Texas Town's Economy
The small town of Sweetwater, Texas, has undergone a significant transformation in recent years. For generations, the land around Sweetwater was associated with cattle, cotton, and oil production.
However, beginning in 1999, wind turbines started appearing on the horizon. The first major wind project in the area was developed by American Electric Power in Nolan and Taylor counties.
The timing of the wind rush was fortunate for the local economy, which had been struggling, particularly for farmers. By 2018, over 1,300 turbines were spread across Nolan County, with one turbine for every 12 residents. The financial change was equally striking, with the county's tax valuation climbing from $500 million in 1999 to over $3 billion by 2017.
Wind development also created a new source of employment, with more than 250 families in the area making their living from wind farms by 2018. Local farmers could continue using their land for traditional purposes, such as growing cotton and raising cattle, while wind turbines operated on the property.
