Windshield Washer Fluid Containers Now Recycled Through Used Oil Program

Albertans who purchase windshield washer fluid containers are now subject to a 48-cent environmental fee. According to the Alberta Recycling Management Authority (ARMA), this fee is not refundable when the container is recycled.

The authority clarifies that windshield washer fluid, diesel exhaust fluid, and antifreeze containers should be taken to participating used oil collection sites for recycling, rather than beverage bottle depots or blue-bin recycling. Environmental fees fund the collection, transportation, and recycling of end-of-life materials.

ARMA notes that environmental fees are based on the labelled capacity of the container and rounded up to the next whole litre. The maximum eligible container size under the expanded program has increased from 30 litres to 50 litres.
