Wisconsin Farmer Calls for Concrete Solutions Amid Ag Economy Woes
A southwestern Wisconsin farmer, Mike Berget, is expressing concern about the struggling ag economy and its impact on farm morale. The rising input costs and low commodity prices are making it difficult for him to plan for the 2027 crop.
Berget raises corn, soybeans, wheat, and hogs in Lafayette and Green Counties. He notes that soaring input costs, including fertilizer, will continue to be a challenge. 'We're going back down below the cost of production again,' he says. 'Fertilizer is going to stay high.'
Berget appreciates the talk of another round of farmer financial assistance in Congress but wishes for more concrete solutions. He suggests that policymakers focus on boosting sustainable demand for crops both globally and domestically.
