A Wisconsin farmer is feeling pessimistic about the future of agriculture due to high input costs and low commodity prices.

Mike Berget, who raises corn, soybeans, wheat, and hogs in Lafayette and Green Counties, says that planning for the 2027 crop is a 'somber experience.'

Berget notes that fertilizer costs will remain high and fall fuel prices are expected to increase, making it difficult for farmers to break even.

While he appreciates talks of another round of farmer financial assistance in Congress, Berget emphasizes the need for policies that address the root causes of the problem, such as boosting sustainable demand for crops both globally and domestically.
