Women Farmers Shine at 2026 Farm Progress Show with Sustainability Pioneering

At the 2026 Farm Progress Show, four innovative farmers will be recognized for their excellence in production agriculture and commitment to sustainability. The Women in the Field: Producer of the Year Award ceremony will take place on September 2 at 2 p.m. in the Hospitality Tent.

Karen Makamson Edwards is one of this year's finalists, managing 5,500 acres of corn, soybeans, and cotton in Mississippi. Despite not intending to return to her family farm, she has emerged as a leader in southern agriculture, advocating for early adoption of technological innovations and sustainable farming practices.

Wendy Johnson is another finalist, running two distinct farming operations in north-central Iowa. At Center View Farms, she manages 1,000 acres of corn and soybeans, integrating oats into the crop rotation and grazing and cover crops. Her certified organic enterprise, Jóia Food & Fiber Farm, raises perennial grains and forages, fruit and nut trees, and grass-fed livestock.

Doris Scully has transformed her farm in Indiana into a model of sustainable agriculture over the past 40 years. She was an early adopter of no-till farming and cover crop practices, which have improved soil health and conservation.

Lisa Tate is also a finalist, managing diverse farming operations in Ventura County, California. She serves as chief financial officer for a separate citrus, avocado, and agave operation, and has developed innovative practices and value-added products in coffee cultivation.
