Woodfibre LNG Project Sparks Greenwashing Claims in Squamish

The Woodfibre LNG project in Squamish, B.C., is preparing to export liquified natural gas (LNG) to Asia. The facility promises to be net-zero by 2027, a claim that has raised some eyebrows among environmentalists.

The project uses electric drive compressors instead of gas-powered ones, which the developers say will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Squamish Nation led an environmental assessment process and is a regulator on the project.

'Environment was first and foremost to us,' said Ian Campbell, a hereditary chief of the Squamish Nation and negotiator of the agreement with Woodfibre LNG. 'We wanted to make sure the revitalization of Howe Sound was paramount.'

However, some environmentalists argue that this amounts to greenwashing, as they are still concerned about the overall impact of the project on the environment.
