WTI Crude Retreats as Geopolitical Risk Eases
WTI crude prices have retreated after recent gains as geopolitical risk sentiment has eased. Reports that Washington is pursuing diplomatic negotiations with Iran instead of immediate military escalation have reduced fears of prolonged supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz.
Despite this, traders remain cautious due to the highly fluid situation across the Middle East and potential for a quick restoration of a sizeable risk premium.
OPEC+ has agreed to increase production by another 188,000 barrels per day for September, completing the latest phase of restoring voluntary production cuts. This decision reinforces expectations that additional supply will gradually return to the market.
The Energy Information Administration's outlook suggests global inventories should begin rebuilding later this year as production recovers faster than demand, which is a headwind for oil prices despite current geopolitical uncertainty.
