WTI Prices Plummet as US-Iran Deal Hopes Spark Crude Oil Crash
Crude oil prices are plummeting as optimism over a potential US-Iran deal fuels hopes for a diplomatic resolution to the five-month-old war in the Middle East. West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the benchmark US Crude Oil price, is down nearly 8% for the day and currently trades below $78. The OPEC+ decision to raise production quotas by about 188,000 barrels per day from September has also put downward pressure on crude oil prices.
US President Donald Trump announced that Mideast allies have reached the parameters of a deal on Iran's nuclear program and the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. This news has triggered a steep decline in crude oil prices, with traders seemingly hesitant to place aggressive bearish bets on the commodity.
Analysts at Danske Bank note that while OPEC+ approved an increase in production quotas, the market impact has been limited due to export disruptions caused by the Iran and Ukraine wars. They predict that a further near-term depreciating move is likely, with any attempted move up being sold into and remaining limited.
