XOP vs TAN: A Tale of Two Energy ETFs
The State Street SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF (XOP) and Invesco Solar ETF (TAN) are two popular energy-focused exchange-traded funds (ETFs). While both offer exposure to the energy sector, they cater to different investor preferences.
XOP provides traditional energy exposure with a focus on companies involved in oil and gas production. Its expense ratio is significantly lower at 0.35% compared to TAN's 0.70%. The fund has seen a year-to-date gain of almost 42%, driven by the recent spike in oil prices.
On the other hand, TAN provides targeted access to the solar industry with a focus on companies involved in manufacturing and deployment of solar power. While it has been more volatile, its long-term performance is impressive, with an annualized return of 9.6% over the past decade compared to XOP's 4.6%.
Investors should consider their risk tolerance and time horizon when choosing between these two ETFs. Those seeking a more stable investment may prefer XOP, while those willing to take on higher volatility for potentially higher returns may opt for TAN.
