Yemen Government Launches 181 Military Operations Against Houthis
Yemeni government forces have launched a significant escalation of military operations against Houthi-held areas, carrying out 181 operations within a 24-hour period. According to Majid al-Nuzaili, the government's military spokesperson, drones, artillery, and rocket launchers were used to target Houthi positions, weapons depots, and military vehicles.
The operations resulted in dozens of casualties among Houthi fighters and destroyed military equipment across seven provinces. Al-Nuzaili stated that these actions were taken in response to recent attacks by the Houthis on government forces, civilian infrastructure, economic facilities, and ports.
The Houthi group has intensified its missile and drone attacks against government-held areas in Yemen and targets in neighboring Saudi Arabia, a key supporter of the Yemeni government. The group announced a maritime ban on Saudi shipping on July 20 and has since claimed attacks on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea and energy facilities inside the kingdom.
Yemen has been embroiled in conflict since late 2014, when the Houthis seized control of much of northern Yemen, including the capital Sanaa. This led to a Saudi-led coalition intervening in 2015 in support of the Yemeni government.
