Yemen's Houthi Conflict Threatens Global Trade and Energy Supplies
The Houthi-Saudi conflict in Yemen has escalated significantly over recent weeks, threatening to disrupt global trade and energy supplies.
The Houthis, backed by Iran, have been engaged in a long-standing conflict with Saudi Arabia since 2004. However, the situation took a turn for the worse when they attacked oil interests in four Saudi cities on August 9th.
The US has expressed concern that the escalating tensions could lead to a wider war between the US and Iran, particularly given the strategic importance of the Bab al-Mandab strait, which lies at the southern entrance to the Red Sea. The strait is one of the world's most important maritime chokepoints, with over 12% of global trade passing through it.
The humanitarian crisis in Yemen is already dire, with over 18 million people facing acute food insecurity and nearly three-quarters living below the poverty line. A wider conflict could exacerbate this situation further, leading to a significant escalation in human suffering.
