Yukon Energy Picks Sides for New Thermal Power Plants

Yukon Energy has chosen two locations for its new thermal power plants in Whitehorse. The company plans to build one at Deep Creek, near Lake Laberge north of the city, and another on the Copper Haul Road within city limits.

The proposed facilities will burn either diesel or liquefied natural gas and are needed to meet growing energy demands in the area. Yukon Energy CEO Joe MacGillivray stated that the company considered 22 potential sites before selecting these two.

MacGillivray emphasized that the plants are necessary due to ongoing power supply strain. 'We've been in deficit for power supply over the past couple of years,' he said, highlighting a close call with rolling blackouts last winter.

The company will now proceed with regulatory approvals and environmental assessments before construction begins in 2028. Yukon Energy is also considering noise reduction measures, as older diesel generators have raised concerns about noise levels in the area.
