Zambia Maize Supplies May Not Translate to Cheaper Unga in Kenya
Kenya is seeking additional maize supplies from Zambia due to declining domestic production. The country's High Commissioner to Zambia, Lilian Tomitom, stated that there is enough maize available for export. However, the cost of transporting grain into Kenya will determine how much of any price advantage reaches millers and consumers.
The landed costs of imported maize in Kenya are a significant factor in determining the final price. Kenya's distance from Zambia means imported grain must travel through regional transport corridors, incurring additional costs along the way. Clearance delays at Kenya's borders also pose a challenge, with Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe advocating for faster laboratory testing and one-stop border processes.
The Government is exploring alternative sources, including Tanzania, but has warned that restrictions on maize exports could affect supplies from both countries. The Cereal Millers Association has urged the Government to give millers flexibility to source from international markets when regional supplies or transport routes become constrained.
