Zambia's Copper Cycles: A Convergence of Opportunity and Challenge

Zambia's copper production is at a critical juncture as the country prepares for elections in August 2026. The moment presents an opportunity to reshape Zambia's economic trajectory, with a convergence of elevated copper prices, committed capital, and surging global demand.

The current copper cycle is structurally different from previous price surges, driven by deeply rooted demands across multiple sectors simultaneously, including electric vehicle powertrains, utility-scale solar and wind installations, power grid modernisation programmes, and data centre infrastructure expansion. These drivers are not cyclically correlated, providing a broader and more diversified structural floor beneath copper pricing.

Zambia holds some of the world's highest-grade copper deposits and sits within the Central African Copperbelt. However, the country's current copper production is far from its ambitious target of 3 million metric tonnes, with reported H1 2026 output at 447,181.93 tonnes, a near-flat growth rate of +0.45% year-over-year.

The sector has attracted over $10 billion in new investment between 2021 and 2025, but the investment-to-output lag is a critical dynamic that industry executives are aware of. The Zambia Chamber of Mines has prioritised six reform priorities, including electricity generation expansion, greenfield exploration acceleration, value addition incentives, transport and logistics infrastructure, dispute resolution mechanisms, and export duty restructuring.
