$10 Billion Equity Deals Priced in Record-Breaking August for India
India's equity capital market has seen a significant surge in dealmaking this August, with nearly $10 billion worth of deals priced. This marks a record month for India's equity deals, according to recent data. The government sale of shares in Life Insurance Corp. of India led the way, raising $3.2 billion. Other notable deals include Manipal Health Enterprises' initial public offering (IPO), which added $958 million.
The rush of dealmaking comes despite a challenging year for India's secondary market. The benchmark NSE Nifty 50 Index has fallen 2.21% so far in August, while the BSE SENSEX has slipped 1.51%. However, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have returned to the market after a long stretch of selling, buying a net $2.5 billion worth of Indian equities in August.
The increased participation from domestic mutual funds and insurers, as well as retail investors, is also driving the surge in dealmaking. Larger offerings are expected later this year from the National Stock Exchange of India and Jio Platforms, but whether buyers will remain at the table will determine how those deals are priced.
