$125B Treasury Auctions Collide with Inflation Reports: A Major Test for Bond Demand and Bitcoin

A major test for bond demand and Bitcoin looms this week as US Treasury auctions totaling $125 billion converge with key inflation reports. The three-day auction schedule, set to take place from August 11 through August 13, will be closely watched by markets amid rising Treasury yields. According to data available up to the August 7 business-day cutoff, three-year yields stood at 4.25%, while 10-year yields reached 4.65% and 30-year yields hit 5.19%. The auctions will be followed by the release of July CPI on August 12 and July PPI on August 13.

The Treasury's $125 billion auction schedule includes sales of three-year, 10-year, and 30-year securities. About $96.3 billion will refinance privately held debt maturing August 15, leaving around $28.7 billion in new cash that needs to be raised from investors. Investors will closely monitor auction metrics, including bid-to-cover ratios and indirect-bidder participation, to gauge demand.

A weaker outcome would require several signs, including a positive tail, softer bid-to-cover ratios, and lower indirect-bidder participation than comparable July sales. If inflation lifts yields, auction demand weakens, and Bitcoin falls simultaneously, it could signal a sharper risk scenario for the cryptocurrency. However, as research from the New York Fed has found, Bitcoin is broadly disconnected from monetary and macroeconomic news in its historical sample.
