$197 Million Wiped Out in Bitcoin Short Squeeze
Bitcoin's recent surge above $76,000 triggered a massive short squeeze in cryptocurrency futures markets. Forced liquidations across various exchanges reached a staggering $197.75M over the past 24 hours.
The majority of these liquidations came from short positions on Bitcoin and Ethereum, which were forced to close as the price rose. This created a self-reinforcing loop where each buy-back added upward pressure, triggering further liquidations.
While the $197.75M figure is significant, it's not unusual during sustained upward moves in BTC prices. In fact, liquidation data doesn't predict future market movements, and markets that aggressively squeeze shorts often reverse once the short overhang is cleared.
