21-Bank Stablecoin Consortium Aims for Cross-Border Dominance
A new dollar stablecoin is in the works, backed by 21 global financial institutions, including Bank of America, Citi, Goldman Sachs, and Deutsche Bank. The consortium plans to launch a US dollar-denominated stablecoin in the first half of 2027, with a euro-denominated token as its first expansion priority.
Industry executives say that institutional backing is not enough to guarantee adoption, citing the need for liquidity, accessibility, and portability to match established alternatives like USDT and USDC. The consortium's connections could make it easier to introduce the stablecoin into existing corporate workflows, particularly for cross-border settlement.
Utkarsh Ahuja, founder of Moon Pursuit Capital, notes that the banks start with relationships that normally take years to develop, but warns that established relationships do not provide the portability that USDT and USDC have built across exchanges, wallets, blockchains, and market makers.
