A group of 21 global financial institutions is planning to launch a USD-pegged stablecoin in the first half of 2027, marking a significant step into the traditional financial system. The new company will be established in the second half of 2026 and will initially offer a USD-pegged stablecoin, with plans to expand to other G7 currencies, including the euro, in the future.

The participating institutions include Bank of America, Capital One, Citi, Fidelity Investments, Goldman Sachs, PNC Financial Services, Scotiabank, TD Bank Group, Wells Fargo, WisdomTree, and several major international banks. The stablecoin will be designed for wholesale, institutional, and retail payments, including cross-border payments and digital asset settlement.

The new stablecoin will enter a market dominated by Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC, which together hold around 83% of the market capitalization. However, the group of 21 institutions is optimistic that their stablecoin can gain traction and become a major player in the market.
