$240M Bitcoin Heist Unravels as Ringleader Pleads Guilty

Malone Lam, 22, is set to plead guilty in a massive cryptocurrency theft case that drained over $240 million from a Washington DC victim's account. The heist began on August 18, 2024, when Lam and his crew used fake Google and Gemini phone calls to trick the victim into surrendering account security codes.

The scam was a classic example of social engineering, with no exchange hacked or malware planted. Instead, the callers convinced the victim to hand over access to their account, allowing Lam's team to drain over 4,100 Bitcoin in mere hours.

Lam and his co-conspirators were not subtle in their spending. They splurged on luxury items, including a $2 million watch, more than 30 cars, and private jets. Veer Chetal, one of the accused, even gifted his parents a Lamborghini and hid $500,000 cash in their laundry machine.

The operation unraveled when Jeandiel Serrano failed to mask his IP address while holding nearly $30 million in stolen funds on an exchange. This basic mistake led investigators straight to his Encino rental, blowing the whole case open.
