26-Year-Old Scams Elderly Man Out of $97K in Cryptocurrency Heist
An elderly man in his late eighties was scammed out of over $97,000 by a younger acquaintance who gained his trust.
The scammer, William Ly, 26, met the victim through a local breakfast club for retired men and became friends with him.
Ly helped the elderly man reset his Coinbase cryptocurrency account password, which was connected directly to the victim's bank account.
The investigation found that over $97,000 was drained in more than 80 separate cryptocurrency transactions between June 2024 and September 2025.
