$40 Trillion Debt Threshold Lures Investors to Gold and Bitcoin
The United States is approaching a significant fiscal milestone as its total outstanding federal public debt edges closer to $40 trillion. According to an analysis from cryptocurrency options trading platform BIT, this trajectory has renewed attention on capital flows into alternative assets such as gold and Bitcoin.
BIT noted that expanded fiscal spending in the United States is unlikely to face immediate constraints as long as the economy continues to grow and overseas investors maintain their support for fiscal deficits and Treasury issuance. However, the analysis highlighted growing underlying concerns about potential reductions by major foreign holders of U.S. Treasury securities.
Japan, the largest non-domestic holder of U.S. government debt, could gradually reduce its holdings to defend its rapidly depreciating domestic currency, the yen. This move would exert additional upward pressure on Treasury yields. Similarly, China has continued to reduce the share of U.S. Treasuries in its foreign exchange reserves while increasing gold holdings as part of a broader reserve diversification strategy.
The trend of diversifying away from dollar-denominated assets has accelerated in recent years, with central banks globally adding gold at a record pace. BIT's analysis suggests that these shifts are not merely market adjustments but signal deeper geopolitical and economic realignments.
