$400M Circle Acquisition Aims to Fix Last Mile Challenge for Stablecoin Payments
Circle is acquiring Tazapay for $400 million in stock to address the 'last mile' challenge that prevents stablecoins from being used for real-world payments. According to Circle, a payment can cross a blockchain in seconds but still fail as a payment if the recipient cannot receive usable local money.
Tazapay connects to more than 60 banking and fintech partners and supports payout rails across over 100 markets, providing the necessary links for local licensing, banking access, currency conversion, and fiat delivery that an on-chain transfer cannot complete by itself.
The proposed acquisition is expected to close in 2027 and will bring a cross-border payments operator inside the company that issues $USDC. This integration has the potential to accelerate worldwide adoption of stablecoins, but it also raises questions about the network's neutrality and governance.
