476M Longs Liquidated in 60 Minutes as Bitcoin Price Dips 2.5%
A massive $476 million liquidation cascade swept through the crypto derivatives market on August 22, wiping out traders who had crowded into bullish bets just before Bitcoin's price dropped by a modest 2.5%.
The forced selling hit across multiple asset classes, not just Bitcoin, with altcoin perpetual futures pairs also caught in the crossfire. Major derivatives platforms including Binance, Hyperliquid, and Bybit saw significant volumes as traders scrambled to close their positions.
What made this event particularly painful was its speed, just 60 minutes passed from the start of the sell-off to its conclusion, barely enough time for traders to reassess their positions. The thin-liquidity amplifier effect also played a role, with even moderate selling pressure moving prices further and faster than it would in a deeper market.
This is not an isolated incident, throughout 2026, one-hour liquidation events exceeding $100 million have become a recurring feature of crypto markets. Previous episodes have cleared more than $450 million in similar fashion, typically driven by Bitcoin volatility catching leveraged traders off guard.
