$49 Million Loss for Ethereum Trader Pension-usdt.eth Amid Violent Price Action
A highly respected Ethereum trader known as pension-usdt.eth has suffered a significant loss of $49 million, ending an impressive 23-trade winning streak. The trader's success was largely attributed to their ability to short Ethereum, but this strategy ultimately proved costly when ETH suddenly moved against them.
The loss is particularly notable given the scale of the liquidations that occurred throughout the cryptocurrency market in a single day. Over 172,000 traders were impacted, with $2.99 billion in leveraged positions being liquidated. Shorts accounted for approximately 91% of these liquidations, totaling around $2.74 billion.
Ethereum itself was responsible for a significant portion of these losses, with second only to Bitcoin at $1.42 billion in liquidations and accounting for about $1.13 billion in the process. The price action of ETH can be attributed to its violent surge from below $2,000 to momentarily break above $2,300.
The trader's loss serves as a reminder that even the most successful trading records are not immune to risk. Leveraged short positions carry asymmetric risk during sudden upside repricing, and this incident highlights the importance of being cautious in the face of rapid price movements.
