$560,000 in Crypto Seized from Hamas as DOJ Cracks Down on Digital Fundraising
The US Justice Department has seized over $560,000 in cryptocurrency linked to Hamas, marking one of the most detailed disclosures yet of how federal investigators traced and monitored crypto funds tied to a designated foreign terrorist organization.
The confiscation effort built on three separate seizure operations carried out throughout 2025, backed by court documents that map out a methodical, multi-agency campaign. The FBI's Counterterrorism Division, Cyber Division, Albuquerque field office, and New York office worked jointly with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia on the case.
The initial March 2025 operation alone recovered roughly $201,400 from wallets that had processed over $1.5 million since October 2024. By seizing the domain and servers supporting Alqassam.ps, the official online presence tied to Hamas's armed wing, investigators effectively hijacked the funnel itself, intercepting donations before Hamas could receive them while quietly gathering intelligence on those behind attempted transfers.
Assistant Attorney General John A. Eisenberg framed the seizures as a direct hit on Hamas's ability to raise money and recruit through digital channels, saying the actions targeted the group's capacity to solicit funds and pull in operatives online. This latest crackdown doesn't stand alone; it's part of broader initiatives designed to disrupt Hamas's financial networks in the aftermath of the October 7, 2023 terrorist attacks.
