$560,000 in Crypto Seized from Hamas as US Cracks Down on Terrorist Financing
U.S. authorities have seized over half a million dollars in cryptocurrency donations intended for Hamas.
The Justice Department also took control of website domains and communication platforms used for fundraising and recruitment, disrupting the foreign terrorist group's operations.
'Your networks are not secure, your crypto is vulnerable and we will not stop until your ability to wage war is defeated for once and for all,' U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said in a social media video announcing the seizure.
According to FBI affidavits, Hamas began testing virtual currency fundraising around 2019 through its Telegram channel before shifting to official websites.
The group boasted that Bitcoin donations were untraceable and would be used for violent causes, with instructions on how to make anonymous donations provided on their websites.
