$5.9 Billion in Crypto Fees: Who Really Benefits?
The crypto industry has reached a new milestone in revenue generation. According to Bitwise's latest CIO memo, the top 10 largest crypto applications generated a combined $5.9 billion in user fees over the past 12 months through June 30, 2026.
PancakeSwap, Hyperliquid, and Aave were among the largest individual apps, each approaching $1 billion in fees. Despite a 36% decline in crypto asset prices during the first half of 2026, major trading and lending applications continued to produce substantial fee volume.
However, it's essential to note that these figures represent gross fees paid by users, not net profit or token holder revenue. The way a protocol distributes its revenue can significantly impact its economic link to the underlying token.
Bitwise highlights Hyperliquid and Aave as examples of different approaches to distributing revenue. Hyperliquid automatically converts part of its fees into HYPE demand, while Aave's revenue path runs through governance, with decisions about where product economics belong made by stakeholders.
