$60 Billion BlackRock Fund Shows Crypto ETF Demand Surging

The BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) has crossed the $60 billion mark in net assets, according to official data from August 28. This milestone reflects the growing demand for exchange-traded products tied to cryptocurrencies. IBIT's assets have increased by approximately $13.05 billion over a two-week period, with its net assets reaching $60.34 billion as of August 28.

The SEC has warned that Bitcoin remains a highly volatile asset and that investors should consider the risks associated with products whose value is tied to cryptocurrency. Despite this warning, the accessibility of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded products has expanded the addressable investor base for Bitcoin. The fund charges a 0.25% sponsor fee and trades on Nasdaq.

The scale of IBIT's growth highlights why Bitcoin ETFs matter beyond crypto exchanges. Investors can buy and sell securities through conventional brokerage infrastructure, while the fund itself handles the operational requirements associated with holding underlying Bitcoin. However, this structure does not make Bitcoin a conventional low-risk investment, as spot Bitcoin ETPs remain exposed to rapid price swings, regulatory changes, cybersecurity threats, and risks involving custodians.
