$684M Loss Exposes Cost of Bitcoin Mining-to-AI Pivot
IREN's pivot to AI has come at a cost of $684 million in one quarter, highlighting the financial burden of transitioning from bitcoin mining to artificial intelligence. The company reported that its AI cloud revenue more than doubled in a single quarter, reaching $70.5 million and surpassing its bitcoin mining revenue for the first time.
The loss is attributed to the decommissioning of ASICs (application-specific integrated circuits) and replacing them with GPUs (graphics processing units) for AI workloads. This process involves significant upfront costs, including a $450.4 million impairment charge on the value of the decommissioned mining hardware.
IREN's financial statements paint a picture of margin compression, with adjusted EBITDA dropping 68% to $19.2 million. The company is ramping up employee costs and investing heavily in infrastructure that isn't yet generating revenue.
The strategy is working, but the financials look terrible right now. IREN has locked in $4 billion in annualized run-rate AI cloud contracts with major players like Microsoft and Nvidia, but only $1 billion of that is operational as of August 26.
