$75 Million Attack Brings Cronos Network to Standstill Amid Fears for Tectonic Depositors
Cronos Network came to an abrupt halt on Sunday after an attacker targeted Tectonic, its dominant lending protocol, in what is believed to be a $75 million exploit. The network's validators stopped block production before most of the stolen funds could escape the chain, likely shielding the CRO token from immediate price damage.
Crypto.com, the company behind Cronos, quickly moved to reassure users that its own exchange and mobile app remained unaffected throughout the incident. However, this assurance only partially addresses the situation, as Tectonic operates independently of Crypto.com's code.
Tectonic's significant presence on Cronos is underscored by its $121.6 million in total value locked, representing 46% of all DeFi activity on the chain, according to DefiLlama data. This makes it the dominant lending protocol on Cronos, with the next largest holding only $30,000.
The fate of Tectonic's depositors remains uncertain as the incident unfolds. Validators now face a crucial decision: whether to roll back the chain, blacklist the attacker's address, or restart without touching anything. This choice will determine the outcome for the approximately $60 million still frozen on the network.
