$97K Crypto Heist Rocks Southern California Senior's Account
A senior citizen in Southern California has been targeted by an alleged scammer who stole nearly $100,000 through cryptocurrency transactions.
The victim, an 89-year-old Ventura County resident, was befriended by 26-year-old Simi Valley resident William Ly through a local breakfast club for retired men.
Ly allegedly helped the victim optimize his cellphone and reset the password to his Coinbase account in June 2024.
The friendship continued until September 2025, when the victim discovered the missing funds had been transferred as cryptocurrency through his Coinbase account, linked directly to his bank account.
