A16z Defends Flock Investment Amid Location Privacy Concerns

A16z, a prominent venture capital firm, has invested in Flock, a company that operates an automated license plate reader (ALPR) network across the United States. The ALPRs are used to track vehicles and have been criticized for their potential impact on location privacy.

In response to these concerns, A16z's general partner David Ulevitch defended the investment, stating that Flock is a tool to help fight crime and protect innocent communities. He emphasized that there are 'vigilant protections in place' to prevent misuse of the technology.

However, critics point out that there have been instances where law enforcement officers have used Flock for unauthorized purposes, including stalking partners. According to The Washington Post, 46 such cases were identified in August this year.

A16z's investment in Flock is part of a broader portfolio that includes several companies focused on strengthening people's privacy, including Nym Technologies and Zcash Open Development Lab. In its crypto-related investments, A16z has publicly supported technologies designed to protect online and financial privacy.
