AAA Unveils Web3 Panel to Tackle Crypto Disputes
The American Arbitration Association (AAA) has launched a dedicated team of arbitrators for the crypto industry, known as the Web3 Panel. This move marks a significant development in the field, bringing together experts with diverse backgrounds and expertise to handle disputes related to blockchain, smart contracts, digital assets, tokenization, decentralized systems, and 'agentic commerce,' which refers to AI-driven transactions.
The initial roster of arbitrators includes Dr. Kabir Duggal from Akin Gump, who brings international arbitration experience; David A. Hoffman from the University of Pennsylvania, who adds academic rigor around contract law and digital governance; Rich Widmann from Google Cloud, offering technical fluency; and Paula Pendley.
The AAA has been working on blockchain-related dispute resolution for some time, having previously developed a framework for smart contract and blockchain disputes. The Web3 Panel builds on this foundation, addressing issues such as contract formation and interpretation in decentralized environments, governance disputes, asset control questions, cybersecurity incidents, and cross-border enforcement.
The timing of the launch is notable, coinciding with the AAA's efforts to create standards that govern AI-agent-driven transactions through its Legal Context Protocol initiative. This protocol involves collaboration with major tech companies including Google, IBM, and Circle.
