Aave Founder Blocks Staking Incentive Cap Proposal Amid Decentralization Debate
A proposal to cap Ethereum staking incentives at 50% of the total supply has been met with resistance from Aave founder Stani Kulechov. The proposal, which surfaced in the Aave governance forum, suggested limiting the amount of staked ETH that could be incentivized through the protocol. Proponents argued that excessive staking incentives could concentrate control and create systemic risks for the network.
Kulechov countered that capping staking incentives would discourage participation and weaken Ethereum's decentralization. He emphasized Aave's role is to remain neutral and not impose arbitrary limits on user behavior. Kulechov believes market forces, not governance mandates, should determine staking levels.
The debate comes at a time when Ethereum's staking participation has grown significantly, with over 30% of ETH supply now staked as of early 2025. The proposal is still in its early stages and has not yet been put to a formal vote. Aave's governance framework requires community discussion and a snapshot vote before any code changes can be implemented.
