ABA Backs Clarity Act with Caveats: Stablecoin Edition
The American Bankers Association (ABA) CEO, Rob Nichols, has expressed support for the Clarity Act, which aims to establish clear regulations for cryptocurrencies in the US. Speaking on CNBC's Squawk Box show, Nichols stated that there is 'a lot of good' in the bill but emphasized the need for small edits to address concerns over stablecoins and local lending.
The Clarity Act has been stalled due to disagreements between lawmakers and banking chiefs over issues related to stablecoin yield. The bill's draft bans officials and their families from issuing or promoting cryptocurrencies, a provision that some opposition lawmakers had previously criticized.
Nichols acknowledged the complexities of the issue but remains optimistic about the potential for collaboration between the crypto and banking sectors, stating 'I do think that the crypto and the banking sectors can coexist. I think we can be the crypto capital of the world and I think we can be the banking capital of the world.'
