ABA Backs Crypto Clarity Act with Minor Edits Ahead
The American Bankers Association (ABA) supports the Crypto Clarity Act, which aims to set clear regulations for cryptocurrencies in the US. According to Rob Nichols, CEO of the ABA, there is 'a lot of good' in the bill, but it still needs some minor edits. The main concerns revolve around stablecoins and local lending, which banking chiefs fear could lead to banks losing customers if crypto exchanges offer more attractive products.
Nichols stated that the ABA is working with Senators to address these issues. He expressed optimism about the potential for the US to become a hub for both cryptocurrency and traditional banking, saying 'I think we can be the crypto capital of the world' and 'the banking capital of the world.'
The bill has been in deadlock since last year's House of Representatives passage due to disagreements over stablecoins. Coinbase, one of the largest US-based crypto exchanges, withdrew its support for the bill after clashing with banking chiefs who oppose allowing customers to earn yield on stablecoins.
