Adam Back Defends Satoshi Theory, Ties Bitcoin Origins to Cypherpunk Research
Blockstream's Adam Back has rejected claims that developer Peter Todd is Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin. This rejection comes after Todd recalled discussing Bitcoin-like systems with Back and Hal Finney as a teenager. Back argues that Bitcoin's proof-of-work math is a discovery, not an invention, and that decentralized money built on this concept circulated on private lists years before any whitepaper.
Back points to a 1997 mailing list thread where cypherpunks discussed the idea of a decentralized currency. He also cites his own Hashcash system, written in 1997 to fight email spam, which later anchored Bitcoin's mining and was cited by Satoshi in the original paper.
Back believes that Nakamoto's real feat was solving the double-spending problem and fusing scattered ideas into one working system. He likened Bitcoin's protocol to the Pythagorean theorem and DNA, stating that it sits in a narrow design space where tweaks can cause it to fail.
