Adam Back Traces Bitcoin to 1997 Cypherpunk Research
Blockstream's Adam Back has countered claims that developer Peter Todd is Satoshi Nakamoto, citing cypherpunk research dating back to 1997 as the origin of Bitcoin. According to Back, the concept of decentralized money built on proof of work circulated in private lists years before the whitepaper.
In a recent exchange, Back pointed to a 1997 mailing list thread and a 2001 exchange with Hal Finney as evidence that Todd was not involved in the creation of Bitcoin. He also stated that Nakamoto's real feat was solving the double-spending problem and combining scattered ideas into one working system.
Back explained that the protocol sits in a narrow design space, likening it to the Pythagorean theorem or DNA, where tweaks can cause it to fail. Critics argue that this brittleness is a sign of weakness rather than inevitability, as the network lacks a firm spec.
