Aerodrome Finance Dominates Onchain BTC-ETH Trading Volume
Aerodrome Finance has taken the lead in onchain BTC-ETH trading, controlling 56% of spot volume for the third quarter. This significant gain comes just a year after launching on Coinbase's Base network.
The decentralized exchange's cumulative trading volume has now exceeded $400 billion since inception. Daily volumes have averaged above $1 billion, with a single-day peak of $1.24 billion recorded in recent months.
The veAERO governance model is behind Aerodrome's growth. Users who lock AERO tokens receive veAERO, which grants voting rights over which liquidity pools receive emissions. This creates a self-reinforcing loop: liquidity providers chase pools with high emission votes, deepening liquidity and attracting more volume.
Aerodrome now controls an estimated 50% to 65% of Base's overall DEX market, leading not just in BTC pairs but also in foreign exchange-adjacent pairs where stablecoin liquidity is deep. Coinbase's introduction of wrapped BTC on Base gave Aerodrome a significant structural tailwind.
The platform's dominance is notable, especially considering that centralized exchanges still handle the overwhelming majority of Bitcoin spot trading globally.
