AfD Seeks to Add Bitcoin to German Reserves Amid Regulatory Push
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in Germany has been advocating for the inclusion of Bitcoin in the country's foreign exchange reserves. The party claims that regulators are being overly cautious and that Bitcoin could be a potential reserve asset.
In October 2025, the AfD tabled a motion in the Bundestag to recognize Bitcoin as a strategic asset. However, Germany's leading parties remain opposed to forming a coalition with the AfD at federal level, leaving proposals regarding cryptocurrency at the discussion stage.
The AfD also opposes the digital euro and wants to enshrine citizens' right to cash directly in the constitution. Additionally, they are pushing for more lenient rules for Bitcoin under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation.
