AfD's Saxony-Anhalt Victory Strengthens Opposition to German Crypto Tax Plans

Share

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has made significant gains in the Saxony-Anhalt state election, winning nearly 44% of the vote and securing 39 seats in the state parliament. This victory gives the AfD a strong platform to influence the country's cryptocurrency taxation policies.

The party has been vocal about its opposition to plans to remove Germany's one-year crypto tax exemption, which currently treats privately held cryptocurrencies as other assets under income tax rules. The exemption is set to expire in 2027, and the government plans to introduce new legislation for the taxation of crypto assets.

AfD co-leader Tino Chrupalla called on CDU lawmakers to work with his party to create a 'center-right conservative majority', which would break the long-standing political firewall between mainstream parties and the AfD. The party's Saxony-Anhalt branch has been classified as right-wing extremist by the state's domestic intelligence agency.
