Africa Poised to Lead Global Stablecoin Revolution

Share

Africa is poised to lead the global stablecoin revolution, according to Gillian Darko, Group Vice President of Strategy at Yellow Card. The continent's fragmented currencies and high transfer fees have created a pressing need for solutions, which stablecoins aim to address.

Darko pointed out that Africa doesn't trade with itself, resulting in a $194.6 trillion cross-border payments market, with Sub-Saharan Africa being the world's most expensive corridor, averaging 14.5% in fees. On-chain crypto transactions in the region have grown from around $205 billion last year to roughly $300 billion this year, with stablecoins accounting for it.

The global stablecoin market is projected to hit $2-4 trillion by 2030, according to Citigroup and Standard Chartered. Darko believes that Africa will be a key driver of this growth, citing the continent's young, mobile-first population and consumer spending expected to climb toward $16 trillion.
