African Giant Earns Global Stablecoin Seat, Paving Way for Dollar Economy
Standard Bank, Africa's largest bank by total assets, is the only African institution in a global 21-institution stablecoin alliance. The consortium spans five regions and has committed to establishing a new stablecoin company in the second half of 2026.
The planned stablecoin is meant for wholesale, institutional, and retail use, including cross-border payments and digital asset settlement. It will operate within the requirements of the US GENIUS Act and Europe's MiCA framework where applicable.
For Standard Bank, this marks the latest step in a digital assets strategy that has been building steadily for several years. The bank made stablecoins, tokenized deposits, digital asset custody, and investment solutions a formal strategic priority, with regulated on- and off-ramps to access digital asset networks while keeping transactions anchored to the banking system.
The bank's blockchain-based Aroko platform processed over one trillion rand in cross-border flows in 2025. This operational track record helped Standard Bank earn its seat in the global consortium.
