Artificial intelligence has reached a concerning milestone in Africa as it now drives more than half of all reported cybercrimes on the continent. According to a recent INTERPOL assessment, AI is linked to 55% of reported cyber incidents in Africa, with losses surging from $192 million in 2024 to $484 million.

The report highlights three primary vectors driving the surge: AI-related scams, credential harvesting, and automated social engineering. Online scams remain the most commonly reported offenses, made more convincing by AI technologies like synthetic identities and deepfakes.

The problem isn't just widespread but geographically entrenched, with 72% of countries surveyed reporting the existence of organized scam centers concentrated in Southern and West Africa.
