AI Agents Go Digital: Stablecoin Transactions Hit 165 Million
AI agents have begun executing financial transactions independently, purchasing computational resources, datasets, and software services without human approval.
The majority of these transactions are facilitated by Coinbase's x402 protocol, which has processed over 165 million individual transactions worth $50 million. Approximately 99% of this transaction volume is denominated in USDC stablecoins.
Lincoln Murr, who leads AI product development at Coinbase, notes that average transaction values hover around 30 cents. The majority of these payments flow toward API endpoints, interfaces enabling software-to-software communication and service requests.
The x402 protocol provides an automated paywall for software interactions, streamlining the process: an agent submits a service request, receives pricing information, executes payment, and obtains the requested resource, all without traditional account setup or payment credential input.
