AI Agents Need a Payment Layer, and Crypto Is Rising to the Challenge
The agentic economy is rapidly growing and needs a payment layer that can process transactions at machine speed, without requiring traditional banking infrastructure.
MetaMask, Coinbase, OKX, and BNB Chain all launched AI agent wallets in June 2026, allowing agents to pay for services and goods autonomously. This is not driven by crypto enthusiasts, but rather engineers solving an infrastructure problem.
The existing rails are unable to support the microtransactions that occur in agentic commerce, with interchange fees on Visa running as high as 1.5-2% per transaction. In contrast, stablecoin rails with near-zero fees and settlement times of seconds can process transactions at a fraction-of-a-cent level.
The volume of agent-to-agent transactions is significant, with Coinbase's x402 protocol processing 150 million transactions totaling approximately $50 million within its first nine months.
