AI Agents Process Record 14M Payments via x402 Protocol in 30 Days
Over the past 30 days, AI agents executed approximately 14 million payments through the x402 protocol, according to data from Token Terminal reported by Bitcoin.com. This milestone highlights the growing role of autonomous systems in handling financial transactions without human intervention.
The majority of these payments were settled in $USDC, a stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar, with 7.3 million transactions on Base and 5.6 million on Polygon. The preference for low-volatility assets in automated payments is evident in the overwhelming use of stablecoins.
x402 is an open payment protocol built around HTTP 402, allowing AI agents to automatically pay for APIs and digital services in real time. This eliminates the need for separate accounts, subscriptions, or manual approval processes, paving the way for a new era of machine-to-machine commerce.
