AI Agents Set to Revolutionize Crypto Payments
Artificial intelligence agents are becoming increasingly sophisticated and will soon require a way to pay for services, which could have massive implications for cryptocurrencies.
The main issue with current payment systems is that they were designed for human users, requiring name, billing address, and bank account information. AI agents can't stop and ask for this information every time they make a purchase.
Crypto wallets offer a solution by allowing agents to hold digital dollars and send them anywhere in the world almost instantly. The entire process can be controlled by software, making it possible for companies to set limits on what an agent can spend and which services it can use.
Companies like Coinbase have already developed systems that enable AI agents to make payments using stablecoins such as USDC. For example, an agent researching the housing market could pay a few cents for mortgage data, local home prices, and forecasting models without creating an account or going through a checkout page.
The number of transactions handled by Coinbase's system is already significant, with over 100 million transactions worth $28 million across Base and Solana. This may not sound impressive, but the small size of these payments is exactly what makes it compelling. An agent could make dozens of these payments during a single assignment, adding up quickly.
Google has also introduced a system that allows AI agents to make purchases for users, working with companies like Coinbase and the Ethereum Foundation to include stablecoin payments. Circle's new system takes it even further by allowing AI agents to send as little as one-millionth of a dollar, making it possible to charge for small services such as searches or computing time.
